Types of ovarian cysts after menopause

A simple cyst is usually thin-walled and filled with fluid. A complex cyst may contain solid areas, partitions, blood products, or other features that need closer review. A cyst can also be described by its size, appearance, and whether it changes on follow-up. These labels do not alone establish whether it is cancer.

Possible symptoms include pelvic pain, pressure, bloating, changes in urination or bowel habits, or feeling full quickly. Some cysts cause no symptoms and are found during imaging for another reason. New symptoms after menopause deserve clinical review.

A transvaginal ultrasound can show whether a cyst is fluid-filled, complex, or changing. Your clinician may combine the scan with an examination, blood tests, and your symptoms and medical history. The plan may be monitoring, repeat imaging, referral to a specialist, or surgery when features or symptoms make removal appropriate.

A laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy removes a cyst through keyhole surgery in selected cases. The combined pill is not a routine way to manage a new ovarian cyst after menopause; discuss any hormone treatment with your clinician.

Arrange prompt assessment for new pelvic pain, persistent bloating, increasing abdominal swelling, unexplained weight change, or bleeding after menopause. Seek urgent help for sudden severe pelvic pain, vomiting, faintness, or collapse, which may signal an acute complication such as twisting or rupture.

Ask whether the cyst is simple or complex, what the ultrasound showed, whether repeat imaging or blood tests are needed, and what change would lead to referral or surgery. Ask how symptoms should be tracked and which warning signs require same-day care.
