Short answer

Scalp folliculitis may appear as itchy follicle-based bumps, pus-filled spots, tender nodules or irritation after friction and sweating.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the different patterns show

Folliculitis is inflammation around a hair follicle. On the scalp, small similar bumps may follow sweating, tight headwear, friction, shaving or heavy hair products. Some cases involve bacteria; others are linked to yeast, ingrown hairs or irritation without an infection. Deeper inflammation can form painful lumps and may affect hair growth if it continues.

Itchy scalp, pimples and skin bumps can occur with folliculitis, but those symptoms also have other causes. A clinician may examine the distribution, scale, drainage and hair changes to decide whether testing or a different diagnosis is needed.

Steps that may help

Wash gently after heavy sweating, avoid scratching and pause oily styling products or tight headwear that seem to worsen the area. Do not squeeze or share combs, hats or towels while bumps are inflamed. Use only a medicated wash or topical treatment recommended for your pattern; bacterial and yeast-related problems do not respond to the same approach.

A clinician may recommend topical antibiotic therapy for selected bacterial inflammation, or oral antibiotics when infection is more extensive. Follow the prescribed course and return if new bumps continue or hair becomes thinner over affected skin.

When to seek care

Seek prompt assessment for rapidly spreading redness, severe pain, fever, abundant drainage, tender lumps or swollen neck glands. Arrange dermatology review if the problem keeps returning, leaves scars, forms crusts or causes patchy hair loss. Urgent care is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or feeling very unwell.

Questions for your doctor

Does the pattern look bacterial, yeast-related, irritant or linked to ingrown hairs? Should I change my shampoo or styling products? Would a topical treatment be enough, and what signs suggest deeper infection or scarring?

Questions people ask

Can scalp folliculitis cause hair loss?

Persistent or deeper inflammation can affect hair growth and may scar, so recurring bumps with thinning hair need medical review.

Should I squeeze scalp folliculitis bumps?

No. Squeezing can injure the skin, spread inflammation and increase the chance of scarring.
