Types of anovulation

Short answer
Anovulation may be occasional, recurrent, or persistent, and the pattern often affects periods and fertility differently.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- No egg release during a cycle
- Patterns
- Occasional, recurrent, or persistent
- Clues
- Irregular periods or trouble getting pregnant
What the types mean
Occasional anovulation can happen in an otherwise cycling person, with a late, light, or missed period. Recurrent anovulation means ovulation is absent in several cycles and may cause irregular bleeding or difficulty timing conception. Persistent anovulation continues over a longer stretch and needs evaluation for hormonal, ovarian, thyroid, weight-related, medication-related, or other causes.
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is one possible condition associated with repeated anovulation, while Premature Ovarian Insufficiency can affect ovarian hormone activity earlier than expected. Irregular periods and Trouble Getting Pregnant can be clues, but either symptom has many possible explanations.
What you can do
Record bleeding dates, cycle changes, medicines, major stress, exercise changes, and symptoms such as acne, excess hair growth, hot flushes, or nipple discharge. A clinician may review this history, check for pregnancy when relevant, and use hormone tests, ultrasound, or other tests to assess ovulation and its cause.
Treatment depends on your goals and findings. Options can include Ovulation Induction; Metformin for PCOS may be considered in selected situations, and Ovarian Drilling is a specialist procedure for some people with PCOS.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment for repeated missed periods, very unpredictable bleeding, or trouble getting pregnant. Seek prompt care for very heavy bleeding, fainting, severe pelvic pain, a new severe headache or vision change, or a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which pattern fits your cycles, what tests can confirm whether ovulation is occurring, which causes are most relevant to your history, and how treatment would differ if you are trying to conceive or avoid pregnancy.

Questions people ask
Can anovulation happen in only one cycle?
Yes. An isolated cycle without ovulation can occur, but repeated changes deserve assessment.
Does anovulation always cause infertility?
No. It can reduce the chance of conception in affected cycles, while the underlying cause and treatment influence fertility.
