What should you know about type 2 hamstring strain?

Short answer
A type 2 hamstring strain is a partial muscle or tendon injury that usually needs protection, graded rehabilitation, and a measured return to activity rather than immediate full-speed exercise.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a type 2 strain means
A hamstring strain involves the muscles and tendons at the back of the thigh. Type 2 generally describes an injury that is more than a mild overstretch but does not represent a complete rupture. Some muscle fibres may be disrupted, causing pain, tenderness, weakness, bruising, or pain when the knee bends or the hip extends.
The label alone does not show the exact tissue involved or predict an individual recovery. A clinician may examine strength, walking, flexibility, and the painful area, and may request imaging when the diagnosis or severity is uncertain. Thigh Pain can have causes other than a hamstring strain.
How rehabilitation is approached
Early care usually limits sprinting, jumping, deep stretching, and any movement that sharply increases pain. Gentle movement within comfort can help prevent excessive stiffness. A physiotherapist can then progress loading from controlled strengthening to faster movements, running drills, and sport-specific tasks as strength and control improve.
Do not use a temporary reduction in pain as permission to return immediately to competition. Exercise Therapy can help rebuild capacity, while Sports Physiotherapy can address technique, training load, and recurrence risks. A Return-to-Sport Programme provides a staged route back to demanding activity. PRP Injection may be discussed in selected cases, but it is not suitable for every injury.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if pain is severe, walking is difficult, bruising spreads, or weakness persists after the injury. Seek prompt care if you felt a sudden snap, notice a visible or palpable gap, or cannot actively move the leg normally. Numbness, a cold or unusually pale foot, or rapidly increasing swelling requires urgent evaluation. Do not return to sport while normal walking and controlled strengthening remain painful.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Which part of the hamstring is injured? What activities should I pause now? Which exercises are appropriate at this stage? What signs show that loading can progress? Do I need imaging or a physiotherapy referral, and what should my return-to-sport checkpoints be?

Questions people ask
Can I keep training with a type 2 hamstring strain?
Avoid activities that reproduce pain, especially sprinting and jumping, and use a rehabilitation plan to guide a gradual return.
When is a hamstring strain ready for sport?
Readiness depends on comfortable walking, restored strength and control, and completion of sport-specific drills without a symptom flare.
Will every type 2 strain need imaging?
No. Examination may be enough, but imaging can help when the diagnosis, location, or severity is unclear.
