What should you know about two types of heart failure?

In heart failure with reduced pumping function, the heart muscle does not squeeze strongly enough to move blood forward efficiently. In heart failure with preserved pumping function, the heart can squeeze but may be stiff and unable to relax and fill normally. Both patterns can raise pressure behind the heart and cause fluid to collect, leading to breathlessness, cough, fatigue, or swollen ankles. High blood pressure, coronary disease, valve problems, diabetes, and rhythm conditions such as atrial fibrillation may contribute. The label is based on heart structure and function, not on how severe a person feels on a particular day.

A clinician may use symptoms, examination, blood tests, an ECG, and an echocardiogram to identify the pattern and contributors. Take prescribed medicines consistently and discuss dizziness, swelling, worsening breathlessness, or troublesome palpitations rather than stopping treatment yourself. Keep appointments for monitoring blood pressure, kidney function, heart rhythm, and fluid symptoms. A chronic disease review can help coordinate medicines, activity advice, vaccinations, and an agreed plan for changes.

Seek urgent care for sudden or severe breathlessness, chest pressure, fainting, new confusion, blue or grey lips, or rapidly worsening swelling. Contact your clinician promptly if you need more pillows to sleep, gain fluid quickly, develop a persistent cough, or notice a clear fall in exercise tolerance. These changes can signal worsening congestion or another problem.

Ask which pumping or filling pattern you have, what caused it, how your heart function will be monitored, and which symptoms should trigger a same-day call. Ask whether blood pressure or atrial fibrillation needs separate treatment.
