Can Tums help acid reflux?

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upward into the oesophagus. Tums can reduce the acidity of material already in the stomach, so it may soothe burning for a limited time. It cannot reliably prevent the backflow itself.

Acid reflux may also be associated with cough, chest tightness, abdominal pain, or difficulty sleeping. These symptoms can have causes unrelated to reflux, so improvement with an antacid should not be used as a diagnosis. A hiatus hernia or obesity can contribute to reflux in some people.

Use Tums only according to the product directions. A pharmacist can check for interactions with your medicines and advise whether calcium carbonate is appropriate if you have kidney disease or other long-term conditions.

Keep upright after eating, avoid meals close to bedtime, and identify foods or drinks that trigger your symptoms. If reflux is regular, discuss a structured plan with a clinician; repeated short-term relief may leave the underlying irritation untreated.

Get emergency help for crushing or spreading chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, or sweating, particularly when discomfort reaches the jaw or arm. Reflux and heart conditions can feel similar.

Arrange review for progressive swallowing difficulty, recurrent vomiting, blood or black material, unexplained weight loss, or cough and sleep disruption that persist.

Ask whether your symptoms meet the pattern of acid reflux, whether your cough or sleep difficulty needs separate evaluation, and which treatment is suitable for ongoing control.
