Short answer

Trying to get pregnant with irregular periods can take more planning because ovulation may be unpredictable or absent in some cycles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What irregular periods may mean

A changing cycle does not by itself show whether pregnancy is possible. Irregular bleeding can occur when the ovaries do not release an egg regularly, a pattern called anovulation. Polycystic ovary syndrome, perimenopause, premature ovarian insufficiency, changes in weight, stress, intense exercise, thyroid problems, and some medicines can also affect cycle timing.

Because fertile days may move from month to month, calendar prediction and ovulation tests can be less reliable. Tracking bleeding, cervical mucus, symptoms, and test results can give a clinician a clearer picture.

Practical steps

Have sex regularly through the cycle rather than relying on one predicted fertile window. Record the first day of each bleed, how long bleeding lasts, and any long gaps. Arrange a preconception appointment to review medicines, health conditions, vaccination needs, and folic acid.

A clinician may check ovulation, thyroid or other hormones, and sometimes ultrasound. Treatment depends on the cause; options may include ovulation support or medicines such as metformin for PCOS when appropriate.

When to seek care

Book an assessment if periods are very far apart, stop unexpectedly, or you have symptoms such as new facial hair, milky nipple discharge, severe pelvic pain, or hot flushes. Seek prompt care for heavy bleeding, fainting, or severe pain. Fertility advice is also reasonable early when cycles are irregular, because waiting for a predictable pattern may delay finding the cause.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your pattern suggests anovulation, which tests can identify the cause, how to recognise ovulation, and whether any current medicine should change before pregnancy. Ask when specialist fertility referral would be useful.

Questions people ask

Can irregular periods make pregnancy impossible?

No. They can make fertile timing less predictable, and an underlying cause may need assessment or treatment.

When should I ask for help?

Ask early if cycles are very irregular, absent, or accompanied by symptoms suggesting a hormone or ovarian problem.
