What should you know about a trichomoniasis lab test?

Depending on your anatomy, symptoms and local service, a clinician may collect a vaginal, urethral or cervical swab, or ask for urine. The sample is examined with a suitable laboratory method. Tell the clinician about recent medicines, pregnancy, symptoms and possible exposure so the result can be interpreted in context.

A positive result supports trichomoniasis and usually leads to prescription treatment. A negative result lowers the likelihood of infection, but ongoing symptoms or a recent exposure may need further discussion. Vaginal discharge and vaginal itching are not substitutes for a test because other conditions can look similar.

Ask the testing service how to prepare and whether you should avoid inserting products before the sample. Until results and treatment advice are clear, avoid sex or use the protection recommended by your clinician. If the result is positive, take every prescribed dose and tell recent partners so they can be assessed and treated.
