Are trichomoniasis and BV the same?

Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. Bacterial vaginosis is an imbalance in the usual vaginal bacteria and is not the same infection. Symptoms can overlap, including a change in discharge, an unusual odour, itching, burning, or discomfort when passing urine. A symptom pattern alone cannot reliably separate them, and some people have few or no symptoms.

A clinician may use an examination and a vaginal sample or other testing to identify the cause. Testing matters because treatment for one condition may not treat the other, and another infection can produce similar changes.

Arrange a sexual-health or gynaecology assessment if symptoms are new, persistent, or follow sexual contact. Avoid self-treating with leftover antibiotics or products intended to alter vaginal acidity. Until you have advice, consider avoiding sex or use condoms; if trichomoniasis is diagnosed, partners may need assessment and treatment to reduce reinfection.

Seek prompt medical care for pelvic or lower-abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, bleeding after sex, pregnancy with new symptoms, or feeling acutely unwell. These features may need assessment for a complication or a different pelvic infection rather than being attributed to BV or trichomoniasis alone.
