Trichodynia and telogen effluvium

How the structures involved in Telogen Effluvium differ from normal

Short answer

Trichodynia is scalp discomfort such as burning, tenderness or pain, and it can occur alongside telogen effluvium, a pattern of increased shedding after a body or life stressor.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Trichodynia
Burning, tenderness, tingling or pain of the scalp
Telogen effluvium
Increased shedding after a physical or emotional trigger

What the two terms describe

Telogen effluvium is a temporary shift in more hairs than usual into the resting and shedding phase. It may follow an illness with fever, an operation, major emotional strain, rapid weight change, restricted eating or another physical stress. Shedding can become noticeable after the trigger rather than immediately, which can make the connection difficult to spot.

Trichodynia refers to an uncomfortable scalp sensation without requiring a visible rash. People may describe soreness when brushing, tingling, burning or pain around areas where hair feels thinner. These symptoms do not prove that shedding is telogen effluvium; scalp inflammation, infection, nerve sensitivity and other hair disorders can feel similar.

Steps that can help

Arrange an assessment if shedding is persistent, distressing or accompanied by scalp symptoms. Bring a timeline of illness, stress, diet changes, medicines and the start of shedding. A clinician may examine the scalp and hair pattern and decide whether blood tests or another evaluation is useful.

Use a gentle shampoo, lukewarm water and a wide-toothed comb. Avoid tight hairstyles, harsh chemical processing and vigorous scratching while the scalp is sensitive. Regular meals with adequate protein and a varied diet support general health; do not start high-dose supplements without checking whether a deficiency is present.

When to seek care

Seek prompt review for smooth bald patches, scalp scaling, sores, pus, marked redness, severe pain or loss of eyelashes or eyebrows. Arrange earlier care when shedding is sudden and extensive, or when fatigue, weight change, menstrual change or other body symptoms accompany it. Urgent help is appropriate for facial swelling, breathing difficulty or a rapidly spreading scalp infection.

Questions to bring

Ask what pattern of shedding is present, whether the scalp pain needs a separate diagnosis, which trigger is most plausible, whether testing is indicated and how progress will be measured. Discuss whether options such as hair supplements, topical minoxidil or other treatment fit your findings.
