Trichomoniasis does not always cause noticeable symptoms, so a person may not realise the infection is still present. When symptoms occur, they can include vaginal discharge, itching, soreness, burning with urination, penile irritation or discharge, and discomfort during sex.

Ongoing infection can keep genital tissues inflamed and can pass between sexual partners. In pregnancy, a suspected or confirmed infection should be discussed promptly with the maternity or medical team, because the care plan may need individual review. Similar symptoms can also come from other conditions.

Arrange testing and treatment with a clinician instead of waiting for symptoms to become stronger. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, allergies and medicines you take. Complete the prescribed course and follow instructions about sex during treatment.

A current or recent sexual partner may need assessment and treatment even without symptoms. Ask about testing for other sexually transmitted infections and return for review if discharge, itching, pain or urinary burning remains after treatment.

Seek prompt care for fever, pelvic or testicular pain, vomiting, faintness, heavy or unusual bleeding, pregnancy with pain or discharge, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These features may signal pelvic infection or another condition requiring timely examination.
