Treatment for a Pulled Hamstring Injury

Short answer
Treatment for a pulled hamstring injury involves protecting the muscle early, then rebuilding flexibility, strength and running control gradually.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding a hamstring strain
The hamstrings are muscles at the back of the thigh that bend the knee and help extend the hip. A strain can happen during sprinting, sudden stretching or a forceful movement. Pain, tenderness, bruising, swelling or weakness may appear in the thigh, and walking can be uncomfortable. Examination helps distinguish a mild strain from a more substantial muscle or tendon injury; imaging may be considered when the findings are unclear or severe.
How recovery is managed
Initially, stop sprinting and movements that reproduce sharp pain. Keep gentle, comfortable movement within your clinician’s advice and avoid aggressive stretching or massage while the injury is highly irritable. Exercise therapy can then progress from controlled range-of-motion work to strengthening, including hamstring loading and hip control. Sports physiotherapy can address technique and training load. A return-to-sport programme should add jogging, acceleration, deceleration and sport drills in stages. PRP injection is sometimes discussed for selected persistent injuries, but it is not suitable for everyone.
When to seek care
Seek an assessment if pain prevents normal walking, bruising spreads, weakness is pronounced or symptoms are not improving. Prompt care is needed after a pop, sudden loss of power, a visible dip in the muscle or pain high near the buttock. New numbness, severe swelling or inability to bear weight also warrants urgent review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which grade and location of strain is suspected, what exercise is safe today, how strength will be tested, and which milestones should be met before running or returning to sport.

Questions people ask
Should I stretch a pulled hamstring?
Gentle movement may be appropriate, but forceful stretching can aggravate an irritable strain. Follow a staged plan from a clinician.
How do I know I am ready to return to sport?
You should be able to perform sport-specific movements with recovered strength and no meaningful pain increase during or after activity.
