Treatment for acanthosis nigricans

Acanthosis nigricans often appears as darker, thicker, velvety skin on the neck, underarms, groin, or other folds. It can be associated with insulin resistance, some medicines, hormonal conditions, or family tendency. A clinician may examine the pattern and ask about health changes and medicines; testing may be suggested when the history points to a metabolic or hormonal contributor. Dark patches have other causes, so a new change should not be labelled from appearance alone.

Managing an underlying condition or reviewing a contributing medicine can soften the change over time. A dermatologist may prescribe a topical retinoid or another product to improve thickening and texture. Chemical peels or laser toning may be considered for selected patients, but irritation can make pigmentation more noticeable, especially in deeper skin tones. Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser, and friction reduction; do not scrub folds or apply strong bleaching mixtures without supervision.

Book an assessment when dark, velvety patches develop quickly, spread widely, itch intensely, hurt, or involve areas beyond the usual folds. Seek prompt medical advice if the change accompanies unusual thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight change, or other new symptoms.
