What should you know about tracheal bronchiectasis?

Short answer

Tracheal bronchiectasis describes abnormal widening or damage in a large airway, which can make mucus clearance harder and needs assessment of the lungs and possible causes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the term describes

The trachea is the main airway connecting the throat with the bronchi. Bronchiectasis is a structural change in which an airway becomes abnormally widened and less effective at moving mucus. When the trachea or nearby large airways are involved, mucus may collect and infections may be harder to clear.

Possible features include a long-lasting cough, coughing up phlegm, chest discomfort, wheeze, breathlessness, or repeated chest infections. Symptoms vary, and the term on a scan does not by itself explain why the airway changed. A clinician may review previous infections, immune problems, inhaled irritants, aspiration, and other lung conditions.

How it is assessed and managed

Arrange a respiratory assessment if this phrase appeared on an imaging report. A clinician may compare older scans, listen to your chest, examine sputum, and request a CT scan or other tests. A Chest X-Ray can provide an initial view, while Spirometry measures how air moves through the lungs; neither test replaces clinical interpretation.

Management can include airway-clearance techniques, fluids suited to your health needs, treatment of infections when present, and addressing an underlying cause. Avoid smoking and reduce exposure to irritating fumes. Do not begin antibiotics without medical advice.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue lips, confusion, fainting, or coughing up more than a small streak of blood. A high fever with worsening chest symptoms can also require same-day assessment.

Contact your clinician if phlegm changes markedly in colour or amount, cough becomes more frequent, or you develop chest pain, fever, or reduced exercise tolerance. Early review can help identify an infection or another problem needing treatment.

Questions to ask

Ask which airway is affected, whether the finding is confirmed, and whether you need a CT scan, sputum test, Chest X-Ray, or Spirometry. Discuss airway-clearance support, warning signs, vaccination advice, and how quickly you should be reviewed if your cough or phlegm changes.

Questions people ask

Is tracheal bronchiectasis the same as a cough?

No. It is a structural airway finding. A cough may occur because mucus collects or infection develops, but other causes of cough are possible.

Can tracheal bronchiectasis be treated?

Care focuses on clearing mucus, treating infections when present, managing symptoms, and finding any underlying cause. The plan depends on the airway changes and your overall health.
