What should you know about toxic mastitis in cows?

Mastitis is inflammation and infection of the udder. In a toxic form, bacterial products and the body’s inflammatory response can affect circulation and organ function. A cow may have a hot, swollen, painful quarter and abnormal milk, then become dull, weak, dehydrated, cold at the extremities, or unable to stand. The condition can worsen quickly and is a veterinary emergency.

This animal condition is different from human mastitis, although both involve breast or udder inflammation. Human breast pain or painful breastfeeding needs assessment by a human healthcare professional; cattle need a veterinarian.

Contact a veterinarian urgently and describe the cow’s alertness, ability to stand, udder changes, milk appearance, appetite, and temperature if it can be measured safely. Keep the animal in a clean, dry, sheltered area with access to water. Do not delay professional treatment or give leftover medicines.
