What can a lump near the tonsil mean?

Lymph nodes in the neck can enlarge while the body responds to a throat, mouth or dental infection. A tonsil stone, cyst or other local change can also feel like a lump. Less commonly, a persistent neck lump may be associated with Head and Neck Cancer, Lymphoma, Thyroid Cancer, or Cancer of Unknown Primary. The lump's presence does not establish any of these diagnoses.

A clinician may examine the tonsils, mouth, throat, neck and thyroid, then choose imaging or a tissue sample based on what is found. Its location, consistency, growth, pain, and relationship to recent infection all help guide the assessment.

Book an appointment if the lump does not reduce after an infection settles, keeps returning, grows, feels firm or fixed, or occurs with a persistent sore throat, voice change, swallowing difficulty, ear pain or unexplained weight loss.
