What should you know about titanium pedicle screws?

Each screw is placed through a vertebral pedicle, a short bridge of bone leading toward the spinal canal, and is connected to a rod. Together, the hardware can correct or maintain alignment and limit movement between selected vertebrae. Titanium offers strength and is compatible with many imaging plans, although the exact implant and placement depend on anatomy and the operation. The screws do not themselves heal a disc or nerve.

Keep the incision instructions close at hand and use the prescribed plan for walking, lifting, bending and sitting. Physiotherapy may focus on safe mobility, posture, leg strength and gradual return to ordinary tasks. Avoid adding exercises or heavy loads without clearance. Attend follow-up visits so the team can review symptoms, wound healing, alignment and any fusion progress when fusion is part of the operation.

Call promptly for increasing wound drainage, fever, spreading redness, new or worsening weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin. Sudden severe back pain after a fall, new difficulty walking, or pain that differs sharply from your expected recovery also needs assessment. Breathing difficulty or chest pain requires emergency help.

Ask which vertebrae will receive screws, whether rods and fusion are planned, what movements are restricted, and how nerve symptoms will be monitored. Discuss wound care, safe sleeping positions, driving, work demands, and what to do if pain, numbness or weakness changes after discharge.
