Tiredness and shortness of breath: what should you know?

Short answer
Tiredness with shortness of breath needs attention because causes range from temporary illness to heart or lung problems.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Emergency warning
- Severe difficulty breathing or chest pressure
What the symptoms can mean
Acute Bronchitis can make breathing uncomfortable during a cough. Asthma and COPD may cause wheeze, chest tightness and breathlessness with activity. Bronchiectasis can bring a long-term cough and phlegm. Anaemia can reduce oxygen delivery and leave you tired or breathless with exertion. Angina may cause chest pressure with activity, while Atrial Fibrillation can cause an irregular heartbeat, fatigue or breathlessness. Anaphylaxis is a rapidly developing emergency that may include swelling, wheeze or difficulty breathing. Breathlessness itself does not show which condition is present.
What you can do now
Stop strenuous activity, sit upright and loosen tight clothing. Note whether symptoms began suddenly or gradually and whether they occur at rest, during walking or after exposure to an allergen. Use a prescribed reliever inhaler exactly as directed, but do not borrow someone else’s medicine. Arrange a clinical review for new, recurrent or worsening breathlessness, especially if fatigue limits ordinary activities.
When to seek care
Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, inability to speak normally, sudden facial or throat swelling, or severe chest pressure. Get urgent assessment for breathlessness at rest, coughing blood, fainting, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, or symptoms that are worsening quickly. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pattern suggests a lung, heart or blood-related cause. Describe cough, wheeze, chest discomfort, palpitations, fever, swelling, smoking or vaping, allergies and the activity that triggers symptoms. Ask whether you need oxygen measurement, blood tests, heart checks or breathing tests, and what action plan to follow if symptoms recur.

Questions people ask
Can being unfit cause breathlessness and tiredness?
Reduced fitness can make exertion feel harder, but new, marked or worsening symptoms should be assessed rather than assumed to be fitness-related.
When is breathlessness an emergency?
Treat severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, collapse, confusion, sudden throat swelling or severe chest pressure as an emergency.
