What should you know about a tiny white bump?

A firm, pearly bump that does not feel inflamed can be milia, a small pocket of trapped keratin. Bumps around hairs may fit folliculitis, especially after sweating, friction, or hair removal. Rough clusters on the upper arms or thighs can occur with keratosis pilaris. Heat rash tends to appear where sweat collects. Lichen planus has a different pattern and may bring itch or a dusky colour. These appearances overlap, so a photograph or examination may be needed.

Wash gently, avoid picking or squeezing, and pause new fragranced products on the area. Keep sweaty skin cool and change out of damp clothing. Do not pierce a firm white bump at home, because this can injure the skin and introduce infection. If itching is the main problem, a clinician can explain whether antihistamine treatment is appropriate. Persistent or bothersome lesions can be assessed for options such as cryotherapy, when suitable.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the bump keeps enlarging, bleeds, crusts, becomes painful, or does not settle after gentle care. Seek prompt medical help if redness is spreading, the area is hot and swollen, or you feel unwell. A sudden widespread eruption, facial swelling, or breathing difficulty needs urgent attention.
