What to know when a tilapia skin graft has healed

Tilapia skin is used as a biological wound covering. It can help shield the wound and support a moist environment while the body repairs the area. It does not become ordinary living human skin. As healing progresses, the covering separates or is removed according to the treatment plan, while new tissue grows beneath it. A healed surface may look pink, red, darker, lighter, shiny, or uneven. Tightness, altered sensation, dryness, and mild itching can continue after the surface has closed because deeper layers are still maturing.

The appearance of the healed area depends on the original injury, its location, depth, infection history, and the person's general health. A closed surface is reassuring, but it does not by itself confirm that deeper tissue has fully recovered or that the final scar appearance has been reached.

Follow the dressing, cleansing, and review schedule provided by the treating team. Do not pull away attached material, scrub the new surface, or apply antiseptics, creams, oils, or home remedies unless they have been recommended for this wound. Protect the area from friction, picking, stretching, and unprotected sun exposure. Once the clinician confirms that the surface can tolerate it, moisturising and scar care may be introduced gradually. Keep scheduled reviews because the team may need to assess skin strength, movement, sensation, and scar changes rather than judging healing by appearance alone.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain is worsening rather than settling, redness is spreading, swelling is increasing, the area feels hot, drainage develops, or the wound begins to open. Fever, feeling markedly unwell, a bad smell, or a sudden change in colour also warrants prompt advice. Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, severe pain, breathing difficulty, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Ask when the covering should be left in place or removed, which cleanser and dressing are suitable, and whether the wound is strong enough for bathing, exercise, work, or stretching. You can also ask how to recognise infection, when scar treatment may begin, whether the area needs protection from sunlight, and which changes should be reported before the next review.
