Throat wheezing at night: what to know and do

Short answer
Throat wheezing at night can reflect narrowed or irritated airways, reflux, mucus, or an allergic reaction, so breathing difficulty needs prompt attention.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible triggers
- Allergens, infections, cold air, mucus, or reflux
- Urgent sign
- Breathing difficulty with throat or tongue swelling
What it may mean
A high-pitched whistle may seem to come from the throat, but wheezing often arises lower in the breathing tubes. Nighttime symptoms can be aggravated by lying down, bedroom dust, pet dander, cold air, or mucus from the nose. Asthma is one possible cause; acute bronchitis can also irritate the airways. Allergic rhinitis may cause post-nasal drainage, while reflux can irritate the upper throat. In babies and young children, bronchiolitis is another possibility. The sound alone cannot identify the cause.
What to do now
Sit upright and loosen tight clothing. Move away from smoke, fragrances, dust, or a suspected allergen and use a prescribed reliever inhaler exactly as directed. Do not share inhalers or start someone else’s medicine. Note when the sound begins, whether it follows meals or exposure, and whether cough, fever, chest tightness, rash, or swelling occurs. A clinician may listen to your chest and assess oxygen levels; treatment could include inhaled medicine or Nebuliser Treatment when clinically appropriate.
When to seek care
Call emergency services immediately for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, faintness, confusion, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat. Anaphylaxis can worsen quickly after food, medicine, or an insect sting. Seek same-day medical care for new wheezing, worsening symptoms, chest pain, fever with breathing difficulty, or symptoms in an infant. Arrange an appointment if nighttime episodes recur, disturb sleep, or require frequent reliever medicine.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the sound is true wheezing or upper-airway noise, whether asthma or allergy testing is needed, and which symptoms should trigger emergency help. Mention medicines, smoking or vaping exposure, pets, mould, recent infections, and any pattern after lying down or eating.

Questions people ask
Can nighttime wheezing be caused by asthma?
Asthma can narrow the airways and cause wheezing, cough, chest tightness, or symptoms that disturb sleep. A clinician can assess the pattern and treatment.
Should I lie down when my throat is wheezing?
Sit upright while symptoms continue. Seek urgent help if breathing is difficult, rapidly worsening, or accompanied by blue lips, confusion, or swelling.
