What should you know about thoracic bursitis?

Short answer

Thoracic bursitis is irritation of a fluid-filled cushion near the upper back or ribs, often causing focused tenderness and pain with movement.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Focal tenderness worsened by pressure or movement

What thoracic bursitis means

A bursa reduces friction where tissues move against one another. In the thoracic region, irritation may cause a tender spot, aching, warmth, or mild swelling. Repeated pressure, leaning against a hard surface, awkward movement, or an underlying inflammatory problem can contribute. Upper-back discomfort can also come from muscles, joints, ribs, or nerves, so the location alone does not confirm bursitis. A clinician may examine the painful area and compare movement on both sides.

What you can do

Reduce the activity or position that repeatedly presses on the area, while keeping gentle movement within comfort. A wrapped cold pack may calm soreness for short periods. Do not massage a visibly hot or swollen area forcefully. A clinician may discuss Anti-Inflammatory Medication, and a Cortisone Injection may be considered when local inflammation persists. Joint Aspiration is sometimes used when fluid needs assessment or removal; it is not appropriate for every case.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain persists, returns repeatedly, limits breathing or arm movement, or comes with swelling, redness, warmth, fever, or feeling unwell. Seek urgent care for sudden chest or upper-back pain with breathlessness, faintness, sweating, or weakness, because these symptoms can have causes unrelated to a bursa.

Questions for your doctor

Could the pain come from a bursa, rib, muscle, or spine? What examination findings support that explanation? Which movements should I temporarily modify, and what warning signs should prompt urgent review?

Questions people ask

Is thoracic bursitis the only cause of upper-back tenderness?

No. Muscles, ribs, joints, nerves, and skin can produce similar discomfort, so examination matters.

Can thoracic bursitis settle without an injection?

Some cases improve with pressure reduction, activity changes, and an appropriate treatment plan; an injection is not always needed.
