What should you know about thick walled ovarian cyst?

Ovarian cysts can be fluid-filled, partly solid, or affected by bleeding and inflammation. A thick wall may reflect a resolving functional cyst, endometriosis, infection, or another type of ovarian growth. The meaning depends on the cyst’s size, internal features, blood flow, symptoms, age, pregnancy status, and whether it changes over time. An ultrasound appearance alone cannot identify the cause with certainty.

Pelvic Pain, pressure, bloating, or changes in bleeding may occur, but some cysts cause no symptoms. A Transvaginal Ultrasound may provide a closer view when clinically appropriate.

Take the scan report to a gynaecology appointment and ask what follow-up interval is appropriate. The clinician may recommend repeat imaging, blood tests, or observation based on the full picture. Do not start or stop hormonal treatment without advice; a Combined Pill may prevent some new functional cysts but does not remove every existing cyst. If surgery is advised, Laparoscopic Ovarian Cystectomy may be discussed as a way to remove a cyst while considering ovarian tissue.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe pelvic or abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, faintness, marked weakness, fever, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms can occur with complications such as twisting, rupture, or bleeding and need prompt assessment. If you are pregnant or could be pregnant, tell the emergency team immediately.

Ask what features make the cyst thick-walled, whether it is likely to change, when repeat imaging is needed, which symptoms matter, and how treatment would protect fertility if surgery becomes necessary.
