What should you know about thick mucus cough?

Mucus helps trap particles in the airways, and coughing helps clear it. A Common Cold or Acute Bronchitis can temporarily increase mucus. Allergic Rhinitis may cause drainage from the nose into the throat, while Acid Reflux can trigger repeated throat clearing or cough. Asthma, Bronchiectasis, Bronchiolitis, and Chronic Cough have different patterns and may need an examination. Notice whether the cough is new, follows an infection, occurs at night, comes with wheeze, or produces blood.

Drink fluids regularly, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use a humidifier only if it is clean and comfortable. Saline nasal rinsing may help when nasal drainage is present, provided the water and device are safe for that use. Rest and follow any prescribed inhaler plan. Do not suppress a troublesome cough with leftover medicine or antibiotics without advice, especially if you have asthma or another lung condition.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, confusion, coughing blood, or an inability to speak in full sentences. Arrange a clinical review for wheezing, dehydration, repeated chest infections, unexplained weight loss, or a cough that persists or keeps returning. Children, older adults, and people with lung disease may need earlier assessment.

Ask whether your lungs, nose, or throat need examination, whether reflux or allergy could be contributing, and whether any inhaler or test is appropriate. Describe the mucus, triggers, nighttime pattern, and any breathlessness.
