What should you know about tetralogy of Fallot on a chest X-ray?

Tetralogy of Fallot is a congenital heart condition involving a ventricular septal defect, narrowing near the pulmonary valve or artery, an overriding aorta, and thickening of the right ventricle. A chest X-ray gives a broad view of the heart and lungs. In some people it may suggest an unusual heart outline or reduced blood flow to the lungs; in others, the findings may be subtle.

An X-ray cannot show every internal heart detail or measure oxygen flow through each chamber. Echocardiography is usually central to evaluating the structure and blood flow, while other tests may be selected for the person’s age, symptoms, and previous treatment.

Ask the clinician who ordered the image to explain unfamiliar terms and how the finding fits with examination, oxygen level, symptoms, and any heart scans.
