TENS for period cramps: what to know

A TENS unit delivers low-voltage pulses through adhesive pads placed on the skin, often over the lower abdomen or lower back. The sensation may feel like tingling or tapping. It can alter how pain signals are processed and may encourage the body’s own pain-relieving response. TENS does not treat a cause such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease, so relief does not explain why cramps occur.

Period pain can be part of painful periods, but pain that becomes stronger, lasts beyond bleeding, or affects daily activities deserves a clinical review. A clinician may ask about bleeding, bowel or bladder symptoms, sexual pain, pregnancy possibility, and medicines.

Read the device instructions and begin with a gentle setting while you are awake. Place pads on clean, intact skin rather than over broken skin, irritated areas, the front of the neck, or across the chest. Do not use TENS while bathing, swimming, sleeping, or driving. Stop if it causes burning, worsening pain, dizziness, or a rash, and remove pads slowly if the skin becomes sore.

Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether TENS suits you if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, reduced sensation, epilepsy, or are pregnant. Heat, movement, and recommended pain medicines may be used alongside it when appropriate. Hormonal options such as the Combined Pill or Hormonal Coil may be discussed when cramps repeatedly disrupt life.

Seek urgent care for sudden severe pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, or pain with a possible pregnancy. Arrange a medical appointment when cramps are new, progressively worse, occur between periods, begin after sex, or do not improve with usual measures. Prompt assessment can identify conditions that need targeted treatment rather than repeated self-management.
