Temple Hair Transplant: What to Know

A clinician examines the shape of the hairline, the density of the donor area, and the pattern of loss. Follicular units are usually collected from a donor zone and placed to follow the natural direction and spacing of temple hair. Temple work demands careful design because the area frames the face and often contains fine, soft hairs at the front edge.

The reason for hair loss matters. Pattern hair loss, traction alopecia, and a stable receding hairline may be approached differently. A transplant adds follicles to a selected area; it does not stop ongoing thinning elsewhere, so medical treatment may be discussed alongside surgery.

Bring photographs showing how the temples have changed and a list of medicines, supplements, and previous scalp treatments. Ask how the proposed hairline will be drawn, how many grafts may be needed, and what happens if native hair continues to thin. Follow instructions about washing, smoking, alcohol, and medicines before and after the procedure.

Expect a healing period with temporary redness, tenderness, crusting, or swelling. Newly placed hairs can shed before later regrowth, and the final appearance develops gradually. Do not scratch grafts or resume strenuous activity until the treating team says the scalp is ready.

Contact the clinic promptly if pain or swelling is worsening rather than settling, redness is spreading, the area feels increasingly hot, drainage develops, or you develop fever. Sudden loss from other scalp areas, marked scaling, or a painful rash also deserves assessment because the underlying diagnosis may need treatment.

Ask whether your loss pattern is stable, whether the donor area can support temple coverage, how graft direction will be chosen, and which non-surgical options could protect existing hair. Discuss expected healing, follow-up visits, and what signs should prompt an urgent call.
