Short answer

Female temple hair loss can reflect pattern hair loss, traction, patchy autoimmune disease, infection or temporary shedding, so the pattern and scalp need assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Record
Recent illness, hormonal changes, medicines and hairstyle tension
Protect the hairline
Choose loose styles and stop painful pulling
Prompt clues
Scale, broken hairs, redness, pain or spreading patches

What may be behind it

Female pattern hair loss often appears as reduced density across the top or a widening part, but the temples can also look thinner. Repeated tension from tight ponytails, braids, extensions or head coverings can cause traction alopecia. Alopecia areata may create smooth patches, while scalp ringworm can cause scale, itch, broken hairs or tender areas. Telogen effluvium may cause diffuse shedding after a physical or emotional trigger rather than a single bare patch.

Hormonal changes, nutritional problems, medicines and scalp conditions can overlap, so a clinician should consider the whole history. Temple thinning alone cannot establish the cause or predict whether it will continue.

Practical next steps

Book a scalp assessment if the change persists, progresses or worries you. Note recent pregnancy, menstrual changes, illness, major stress, dietary restriction, new medicines and hairstyle changes. Photograph the hairline in consistent lighting. Wear looser styles, vary the direction of parting and stop any technique that causes soreness or pulling.

A clinician may inspect follicles and hair shafts and decide whether blood tests or other evaluation is useful. Treatment follows the cause. Finasteride treatment is not suitable for everyone and requires a careful discussion of pregnancy potential, medicines and expected benefits before use.

When to seek care

Seek prompt care for a painful or inflamed scalp, pus, heavy scale, broken hairs, rapidly spreading patches, fever or swollen glands. Arrange medical review when eyebrow loss, acne, excess facial hair, marked cycle changes or hair loss from other areas occurs with temple thinning. Early treatment can matter when infection or ongoing traction is involved.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the loss is patterned, traction-related, patchy or inflammatory; what history or tests could clarify it; whether follicles appear scarred; which treatments fit pregnancy plans; and how progress will be monitored.
