What should you know about telogen effluvium and itchy scalp?

Telogen effluvium mainly causes diffuse shedding, so an itchy scalp may reflect a separate condition, irritation, or inflammation that deserves assessment. Itching does not establish the cause of hair loss, particularly when there is redness, scale, soreness, or a new product involved.

Telogen effluvium shifts more hairs into a resting phase and usually produces widespread shedding with a relatively normal-looking scalp. Scratching may break hairs and worsen skin irritation, making thinning appear more prominent.
