Tanning and stretch marks: what to know

How the structures involved in Stretch Marks differ from normal

Short answer

Tanning can make stretch marks look more noticeable because the surrounding skin darkens while the marks may tan differently; sun protection helps limit contrast and further skin damage.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Why they stand out

Why the contrast changes

Stretch marks form when deeper skin structures stretch and remodel, leaving lines that may be red, purple, brown, or lighter than nearby skin. Tanning increases pigment in surrounding skin, but stretch-mark tissue may respond unevenly. This can make older pale lines stand out, while newer coloured marks may appear different as they mature.

A tan does not repair the underlying change and can add sun damage. A sudden, broad change in the skin, easy bruising, or stretch marks appearing without an obvious period of growth, weight change, pregnancy, or muscle development should be discussed with a clinician.

Protect and plan

Avoid deliberate tanning and cover the area when practical. Use sunscreen on exposed skin and moisturise for comfort, but know that moisturiser does not rebuild stretched support tissue. Do not scratch, aggressively exfoliate, or apply unverified bleaching products.

If the marks bother you, a dermatologist can assess their age, colour, texture, and location before discussing options. Depending on the goal and skin type, conversations may include [Microneedling](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/microneedling/), [Fractional Laser Treatment](/treatments/laser-and-energy/fractional-laser-treatment/), [RF Microneedling](/treatments/laser-and-energy/rf-microneedling/), or [Carboxytherapy](/treatments/aesthetic-procedures/carboxytherapy/). Results and suitability vary, and several appointments may be considered.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if stretch marks appear rapidly without an apparent trigger, cover unusual areas, or occur with muscle weakness, easy bruising, or other new body changes. Seek prompt care for pain, ulceration, bleeding, marked swelling, or signs of infection rather than treating the area cosmetically.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Are these typical stretch marks? Are they early or mature? How might my skin tone affect treatment choice? What improvement is realistic? How should I protect the area before and after a procedure? What side effects and downtime should I plan for?

Questions people ask

Can tanning remove stretch marks?

No. Tanning may change the contrast but does not restore the altered skin structure.

Should I tan before treatment?

Discuss timing with the clinician; recent tanning can affect procedure planning and recovery.
