Signs of influenza

Short answer
Influenza commonly begins suddenly with fever, chills, headache, cough, marked tiredness, and a generally unwell feeling.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical onset
- Symptoms may appear suddenly rather than building slowly.
- Watch breathing
- Breathlessness or chest pain needs prompt assessment.
The symptom pattern
Influenza can cause a stronger whole-body illness than an ordinary cold. Fever or chills may occur with headache, muscle aches, weakness, sore throat, and a dry or productive cough. Some people also have nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Symptoms overlap with other infections, so the pattern alone cannot confirm influenza. Pneumonia is a possible complication when infection affects the lungs, particularly if breathing symptoms become more severe.
Caring for yourself
Rest, drink fluids regularly, and use suitable fever or pain relief according to the label or a clinician's advice. Stay home while acutely unwell and improve ventilation around others. People at higher risk because of age, pregnancy, chronic illness, or reduced immunity should contact a clinician early, as antiviral treatment may be considered. Do not give aspirin to children or teenagers unless a clinician specifically advises it.
When urgent care is needed
Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing, chest pain, blue or grey lips, severe dehydration, confusion, collapse, or a fever that improves and then returns with worsening cough. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and those with significant long-term conditions should seek advice sooner if symptoms are intense or rapidly worsening.
Questions for a clinician
Could testing change my treatment? Am I at higher risk of complications? Should I consider an antiviral medicine? When can I safely return to work, school, exercise, or close contact with others?

Questions people ask
Is a cough alone enough to identify influenza?
No. Cough can occur with many illnesses; fever, chills, headache, fatigue, and the overall pattern provide more context, but testing or clinical assessment may be needed.
When should influenza symptoms be checked?
Seek advice for breathing difficulty, dehydration, confusion, worsening after improvement, or if you have a higher risk of complications.
