What should you know about tailor's bursitis?

Short answer
Tailor's bursitis is irritation of a small fluid-filled sac near the outer side of the little-toe joint, often causing tender swelling.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical site
- The outer side of the little-toe joint.
- First adjustment
- Reduce rubbing with a roomy, soft toe box.
What the bursa does
A bursa cushions tissues where they rub against bone. At the outer edge of the foot, repeated pressure from narrow shoes, a prominent joint, walking mechanics, or an injury can irritate this sac. Pain, warmth, tenderness, and local swelling may make shoes uncomfortable. Similar symptoms can arise from a bunionette, infection, gout, or another joint problem, so the appearance of the foot is not enough to identify the cause. A clinician may examine the joint and skin and may request tests when infection or crystal inflammation is a concern.
Reducing pressure
Choose footwear with a wide, soft toe area and avoid rubbing seams. Rest from activities that press on the outside of the foot, while keeping comfortable movement. Elevation and a wrapped cold pack may reduce temporary swelling. A clinician may recommend [Anti-Inflammatory Medication](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/anti-inflammatory-medication/), a [Cortisone Injection](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/cortisone-injection/), or [Joint Aspiration](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/joint-aspiration/) after considering the cause. Do not puncture or drain the swelling yourself.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if swelling persists, footwear remains difficult, or pain limits walking. Seek prompt care for rapidly increasing redness or warmth, drainage, fever, red streaks, or severe pain, especially if you have diabetes or reduced sensation in the foot. These features can require timely treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the swelling is bursitis, a bunionette, gout, or infection; whether an X-ray or fluid test is useful; and which shoes or padding are safest. Ask what improvement to expect, when an injection is considered, and how to prevent repeated pressure.

Questions people ask
Should I squeeze or drain the swelling?
No. Opening or squeezing it can injure the skin and introduce infection; assessment is safer.
Can shoes trigger tailor's bursitis?
Repeated pressure or rubbing from tight footwear can irritate the bursa and worsen symptoms.
