Symptoms of a wheezing cough

Cough clears mucus or irritants, while wheezing reflects air moving through narrowed airways. [Acute Bronchitis](/conditions/acute-bronchitis/) can cause both during a chest infection. Asthma may produce episodes after exercise, cold air or allergens. [Allergic Rhinitis](/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/) can contribute through post-nasal drainage, while COPD can cause ongoing cough and noisy breathing. In babies, [Bronchiolitis](/conditions/bronchiolitis/) is another possibility.

Rest, drink fluids and avoid smoke, vaping and strong scents. Sit upright if coughing makes breathing uncomfortable. If you have a prescribed inhaler, follow your written plan and check your technique with a clinician. Note the cough’s duration, triggers, phlegm, fever and whether symptoms disturb sleep. Do not use someone else’s medicine or leftover antibiotics.

Get emergency help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak normally, collapse, confusion, or sudden swelling of the lips, tongue or throat. Seek prompt review if symptoms rapidly worsen, recur often or do not improve with your prescribed plan.

Ask whether the combination suggests asthma, infection, allergy or another airway problem, and whether you need breathing tests.
