Symptoms of walking pneumonia in adults

Walking pneumonia is a form of [Pneumonia](/conditions/pneumonia/) affecting the air sacs and surrounding lung tissue. Adults may stay mobile and underestimate the infection, yet the cough and low energy can continue or gradually worsen. Some people cough up phlegm, while others have a dry cough. Symptoms overlap with [Influenza](/conditions/influenza/) and [COVID-19](/conditions/covid-19/), so the pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Arrange a clinical assessment when cough, fever or breathlessness persists, interferes with normal activity, or worsens after a respiratory illness. Rest, drink fluids, avoid smoking and monitor breathing. A clinician may listen to your lungs and decide whether tests or prescription treatment are needed. Do not use leftover antibiotics, because they may not treat the cause.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, or inability to stay awake. Urgent assessment is also needed if breathing becomes rapidly worse or you are unable to drink. A serious infection can sometimes progress to [Sepsis](/conditions/sepsis/), which needs immediate treatment.

Ask whether your symptoms could be pneumonia, influenza or COVID-19, whether a chest examination or test is needed, and which changes should prompt urgent review. Mention your temperature pattern, breathing at rest and with activity, phlegm colour, and any medical conditions.
