Symptoms of restless legs

Short answer
Restless legs symptoms include an uncomfortable urge to move the legs, sensations that worsen at rest or night, and temporary relief with movement.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical timing
- Worse during rest and often more noticeable at night
- Typical relief
- Movement may ease sensations temporarily
Recognising the pattern
People describe crawling, pulling, tingling, throbbing, itching, or an internal need to move. Symptoms often begin during sitting or lying down, become stronger in the evening, and interrupt sleep. Walking, stretching, or shaking the legs may ease them briefly, but the discomfort can return when you rest. This pattern differs from ordinary muscle cramps. Restless legs syndrome can occur on its own or alongside iron deficiency anaemia, chronic kidney disease, or peripheral neuropathy, so the symptom does not identify one cause by itself.
Ways to reduce disruption
Keep a record of when symptoms occur, what relieves them, your sleep quality, and any medicines or supplements you use. Gentle stretching, walking, massage, and a regular sleep routine may help. Limiting caffeine late in the day and avoiding nicotine or alcohol near bedtime may reduce triggers for some people. Do not start iron supplementation without advice, because excess iron can be harmful and treatment should follow a confirmed need.
When assessment is needed
Arrange an appointment if the sensations repeatedly disturb sleep, interfere with work or travel, or began after a new medicine. Seek prompt care for one-sided leg swelling, redness, warmth, sudden weakness, or severe pain, because those features do not fit the usual restless-legs pattern. Also mention pregnancy, kidney problems, numbness, or known anaemia to the clinician.
Questions for your doctor
Does my symptom pattern fit restless legs syndrome? Should my iron level or other health conditions be checked? Could any medicine be contributing, and what treatment is suitable for my sleep problems?

Questions people ask
Are restless legs symptoms only in the legs?
The discomfort is usually in the legs, but some people experience similar sensations in the arms or elsewhere. Tell your clinician where you feel them.
Should I take iron for restless legs?
Only after a clinician checks whether iron deficiency is present and advises an appropriate treatment.
