Symptoms of pneumonia after rib injury

Pain can cause shallow breaths and make you avoid coughing. This can allow mucus to remain in the airways, while infection may cause inflammation in the lungs. Pneumonia commonly presents with cough, fever, chills, tiredness, breathlessness, or discomfort that worsens when breathing deeply. A rib injury itself can also cause chest pain, so a change from the original pattern matters. Pneumonia is one possible explanation; influenza and COVID-19 can cause similar symptoms.

Contact a clinician promptly if symptoms are new, worsening, or accompanied by a fever. Describe when the injury happened, how your pain affects breathing, whether you are coughing up phlegm, and any medicines you take. Keep hydrated if you can, rest, and follow the pain-relief instructions you were given. Do not tightly bind your chest, because restricting movement can make breathing and clearing mucus harder. A clinician may check your breathing and decide whether further tests are needed.

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or chest pain that is severe or unexpected. Urgent assessment is also needed if you cough up blood or cannot keep fluids down. A serious infection can sometimes spread beyond the lungs, so marked deterioration should not wait for a routine appointment.
