Symptoms of mastitis in women

The breast may hurt continuously or become more painful when touched. A firm patch or lump-like area can develop, sometimes with skin that looks red or feels hotter than the surrounding breast. Some women develop feverishness, chills, body aches, headache, or marked tiredness. Mastitis can occur during breastfeeding, but breast inflammation can also have other causes, so an assessment is useful when symptoms are new or persistent.

Rest and use a cool compress over the sore area for brief periods. Wear a supportive bra that does not press tightly, and avoid repeated squeezing or deep massage of the breast. Simple pain relief may help if it is suitable for you; a pharmacist or clinician can check this against pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, and other medicines. Keep track of redness, swelling, temperature, and pain so you can describe changes accurately.

Arrange prompt medical advice for feverishness with a painful red breast, rapidly spreading redness, worsening swelling, or feeling significantly ill. Urgent care is appropriate for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, breathing trouble, or a rapidly enlarging tender area. A persistent lump, nipple discharge that is bloody or unusual for you, or symptoms that do not settle also needs examination. Mastitis symptoms can overlap with other breast conditions, so do not rely on appearance alone.

Ask what may be causing the inflammation, whether you need a breast examination or imaging, and which treatments fit your health history. Ask how soon you should return if the redness, lump, or feverish feeling continues.
