Symptoms of gout in the heel

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by urate crystals collecting in a joint. Heel discomfort may involve the ankle, the base of the toes, or the band of tissue beneath the foot, so the exact location matters. An attack often makes walking, standing, or contact with footwear difficult. Symptoms can settle between attacks, but recurring episodes deserve assessment because untreated inflammation may damage joints.

Heel pain has other possible causes, including tendon or soft-tissue problems. A clinician may examine the area and consider blood tests, imaging, or fluid testing when the diagnosis is uncertain.

Rest the painful foot, raise it when practical, and keep pressure off the tender area. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may ease discomfort for short periods. Drink normally unless a clinician has given you fluid restrictions, and do not start or stop urate-lowering or anti-inflammatory medicine without medical advice. Note when symptoms began, the affected site, and any previous attacks or kidney problems.

Arrange prompt medical assessment for a first episode, severe pain, or symptoms that are worsening. Seek urgent help if a hot swollen joint comes with fever, chills, feeling very unwell, or inability to bear weight, because infection can resemble gout. Get advice sooner if you have known kidney disease or take medicines that affect urate.
