Symptoms of gout in the feet

Gout is an inflammatory condition caused by urate crystals collecting in a joint and provoking inflammation. The big toe is a familiar site, but the midfoot, toes, or ankle can also hurt. A flare may make even light contact from socks or bedding uncomfortable. Swelling can limit joint movement and change the way you walk. Foot pain and swelling have other possible causes, including injury and infection, so a clinician may need to examine you and use tests before confirming gout.

Rest the affected foot, raise it when possible, and use roomy footwear or go barefoot indoors if that is safer and more comfortable. A wrapped cool pack can provide short-term relief. Follow prescribed treatment instructions and do not alter long-term gout medicine on your own. Record when the attack began, which joint is affected, and any recent illness, medication change, or dehydration.

Seek medical advice for a first attack, recurring flares, or symptoms that keep you from walking. Get urgent help for a hot swollen foot with fever or chills, rapidly spreading redness, severe illness, or an inability to bear weight, because infection can resemble gout.
