Symptoms of GERD cough

Acid reflux can irritate the food pipe and throat; reflux reaching the upper throat may also stimulate a cough reflex. Some people have cough without obvious heartburn. A cough that comes with a blocked or itchy nose, wheeze, mucus, or an acute illness may have another explanation. Possible alternatives include allergic rhinitis, asthma, a common cold, acute bronchitis, or a longer-lasting cough condition. Notice whether coughing follows meals, bending, or lying down. Choose smaller meals, remain upright after eating, and avoid late meals if they trigger symptoms. Reduce personal triggers such as fatty foods, alcohol, mint, or spicy foods when a clear link exists. Avoid smoking and raise the head end of the bed rather than piling up pillows. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on an antacid or reflux medicine, especially if you take other medicines or are pregnant.

Arrange an appointment for a cough that persists, repeatedly disturbs sleep, or returns despite reflux measures. Seek urgent care for breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, blue lips, confusion, or difficulty swallowing. Prompt assessment is also sensible with unexplained weight loss, recurrent vomiting, or black stools. A clinician may examine your chest and throat and decide whether reflux testing or another evaluation is needed.
