Dengue is caused by a virus carried by infected mosquitoes. Fever may arrive suddenly, alongside headache, pain behind the eyes, aching joints and muscles, chills, nausea or a rash. Because other infections can cause the same pattern, a healthcare professional may need to assess you and decide whether testing is useful.

Bleeding or easy bruising is not something to ignore. Symptoms may become more concerning around the time the fever improves, so keep checking how you feel and whether you can drink and urinate normally.

Rest, sip water or oral rehydration fluids often, and write down your temperature and symptoms. Ask a clinician or pharmacist before taking a pain or fever medicine; avoid aspirin and ibuprofen unless they specifically recommend them. Protect yourself from mosquito bites with repellent, clothing and screens.

Arrange a GP Consultation when dengue is possible, especially after travel or mosquito exposure. Share when symptoms started and all medicines or supplements you take.

Get urgent medical help for bleeding, severe or persistent stomach pain, repeated vomiting, difficulty breathing, fainting, confusion, marked sleepiness, cold clammy skin or very little urine. Do not wait for a rash or for the fever to return before seeking help.
