What should you know about swine influenza?

Influenza is a respiratory infection. Swine-origin strains can cause fever, chills, cough, headache, fatigue, and a general feeling of being unwell. Symptoms may begin fairly suddenly, and their combination can overlap with other viral infections.

Most people recover with supportive care, but influenza can sometimes affect the lungs and lead to pneumonia. Risk is higher for some people, including those who are pregnant, very young, older, or living with certain long-term conditions. A clinician may use the illness pattern, exposure history, and testing to guide diagnosis.

Stay home while you feel ill, rest, drink fluids, and use simple measures to ease fever or aches as advised for your age and health. Avoid sharing cups and towels, improve airflow indoors, and wash your hands after coughing or blowing your nose.

Contact a clinician early if you are at higher risk or symptoms are intense, because antiviral treatment may be considered. Antibiotics do not treat influenza itself, although a clinician may prescribe them when a separate bacterial infection is suspected.

Get urgent help for difficult or fast breathing, chest pain, confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, or lips that look blue or grey. Arrange medical advice if symptoms worsen after initial improvement, fever remains concerning, or you have a condition that makes respiratory infections harder to manage.
