What should you know about suture anchor types?

Anchors may be metal, non-absorbable polymer, or bioresorbable material. Some are screwed into bone; others are inserted by a push-in technique. Their eyelets and suture arrangements also vary, allowing the surgeon to match the device to tissue thickness, bone quality, access, and the repair’s direction of pull.

A resorbable anchor is designed to break down gradually, while a non-resorbable anchor remains in place. Neither label alone tells you how well a repair will heal: the repaired tissue and rehabilitation plan remain central.

Before surgery, ask for the device name and why it suits your repair. Afterward, follow restrictions even if the implant is small. Avoid sudden loading, keep incisions clean and dry as instructed, and progress from assisted movement to strengthening only when cleared.

Report fever, increasing wound redness, drainage, separation, escalating pain, new tingling, or a sudden loss of movement. Emergency assessment is needed for chest pain, difficult breathing, or a limb that is cold, pale, blue, or rapidly becoming very swollen.
