What is surgical excision of the uterus called?

A hysterectomy is a gynaecological operation in which the uterus is removed. Depending on the reason for treatment and the surgical plan, the cervix, fallopian tubes or ovaries may also be removed; those details are not implied by the word hysterectomy alone.

In dermatology, surgical excision means cutting out a skin lesion, such as a mole or suspected skin cancer, together with a margin of nearby skin when appropriate. The removed tissue may be sent for laboratory examination. This is different from uterine surgery and is not another name for a hysterectomy.

Check the exact body part and procedure name on your referral, consent form or appointment message. If the discussion concerns a uterine operation, ask the gynaecology team to explain the planned approach, what will be removed, recovery expectations and possible effects on fertility or hormones. If the appointment concerns a skin growth, a dermatology clinician can explain whether excision, a specialised technique such as Mohs surgery, or monitoring is appropriate.
