What should you know about suprapubic cystoscopy?

A cystoscope is a narrow instrument with a camera and light. In a suprapubic approach, it passes through a tract in the lower abdominal wall into the bladder rather than through the urethra. The clinician may use sterile fluid to expand the bladder and inspect its lining, openings and any area of concern. The route may be useful when the urethra is difficult to access or when a person already has a suprapubic catheter. The reason for the examination determines whether tissue samples or another procedure are discussed.

Follow the instructions about medicines, eating and drinking, and catheter care. Ask whether you need someone to take you home if sedation is planned. Mild bladder discomfort, urinary urgency or a small amount of blood can occur afterwards. Drink fluids if your team says this is appropriate, keep the site clean as instructed, and take prescribed medicines exactly as directed. Your clinician will explain when results or biopsy findings are available.

Contact the care team urgently for fever, chills, worsening abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, clots that obstruct urine, or a catheter that stops draining. Emergency assessment is needed for severe pain, faintness, confusion or signs of a serious infection. Do not wait for a routine result discussion when these problems appear.
