Sun tan spots: what to know

A tan can make existing uneven pigment more noticeable, while heat, sweat, occlusive products, or friction may trigger pimple-like bumps. A bump around a hair follicle can fit folliculitis or razor bumps. Small bumps around the mouth may instead reflect perioral dermatitis, and persistent flushing or central facial bumps can occur with rosacea. Acne, including hormonal acne, can also flare independently of tanning. Texture is a useful clue: pimples and follicle bumps are raised, while post-inflammatory marks are flat.

Pause tanning and use a gentle cleanser, non-comedogenic moisturiser, and broad-spectrum sunscreen. Avoid squeezing bumps, scrubbing pigment, or layering several new active products. Note whether the spots itch, sting, contain fluid, follow hair removal, or recur around the mouth. A dermatologist can match treatment to the cause; LED Light Therapy may be discussed for selected acne-related concerns, but it is not a diagnosis.

Seek an assessment if bumps are painful, deep, rapidly spreading, repeatedly pus-filled, leaving scars, or failing to settle after stopping the suspected trigger. Prompt care is also sensible for facial swelling, eye involvement, fever, or a rash with breathing symptoms. A changing flat mark should be assessed separately from ordinary pimples.
