What should you know about submandibular cellulitis treatment?

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of deeper skin and soft tissue. Beneath the jaw, redness, warmth, tenderness, and swelling may be accompanied by fever or a firm, painful area. A dental infection, mouth injury, skin break, or another nearby infection can be relevant, so the clinician may examine the mouth, teeth, throat, and neck as well as the skin.

This location can overlap with deeper spaces under the tongue or jaw. The visible skin may not show the full extent of the infection, which is why a rapidly changing swelling deserves in-person assessment.

Treatment commonly involves prescription antibiotics selected for the suspected source and severity. Some people need observation or antibiotics through a vein, while others can take medicine by mouth with close follow-up. If an abscess, dental source, or deeper collection is found, drainage or dental treatment may be needed.

Take prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed and do not share leftover medicine. Rest, drink fluids if swallowing is comfortable, and mark the edge of visible redness only if a clinician recommends monitoring it. Diabetes or a weakened immune system can affect the plan and should be disclosed.

Go to emergency care for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, a muffled voice, inability to open the mouth normally, rapidly increasing neck or floor-of-mouth swelling, confusion, faintness, or severe weakness. Fever with a fast-worsening infection also needs urgent review because a serious bloodstream response can develop.
