Short answer

Subhyoid bursitis is irritation of a small fluid-filled sac beneath the hyoid region, which can cause front-of-neck tenderness and swelling.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Area
Upper front of the neck beneath the hyoid region.
Possible symptoms
Local tenderness, swelling, and discomfort with swallowing or neck movement.
Assessment
Neck examination guides whether further testing is needed.

What it means

The hyoid is a small bone in the upper neck that supports muscles involved in swallowing and speech. A bursa near this area can become irritated by repeated movement, pressure, local injury, or nearby inflammation. Symptoms may include a tender spot under the jaw or upper front of the neck, discomfort when swallowing or turning the head, and a soft or firm-feeling swelling. Because neck swelling can have many causes, an examination is needed rather than relying on location alone.

A clinician may examine the mouth, throat, neck movement, and nearby glands. Further tests can be considered if the swelling is persistent, unusual, or associated with infection symptoms.

What to do

Avoid pressing or repeatedly rubbing the tender area, and choose soft foods temporarily if chewing or swallowing aggravates it. Rest the neck from activities that reproduce the pain, while keeping movement gentle. Ask a clinician or pharmacist whether anti-inflammatory medication is safe with your health history and other medicines. If fluid collects or symptoms continue, a specialist may discuss aspiration or a cortisone injection only after other causes, including infection, have been considered.

When to seek care

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck swelling, a muffled voice, or severe illness. Arrange prompt assessment for fever, spreading redness, pus, worsening pain, or swelling after an injury. Make an appointment if a lump remains, returns, or changes, even when discomfort is mild.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Is the swelling arising from a bursa or another neck structure? Do I need imaging or fluid testing? Which swallowing and neck movements should I limit? What symptoms would mean infection is developing?

Questions people ask

Does subhyoid bursitis always cause difficulty swallowing?

No. It may cause local tenderness only, although swallowing can be uncomfortable when nearby tissues are irritated.

Should a persistent neck lump be checked?

Yes. A lump that remains, changes, or is accompanied by fever or swallowing problems needs clinical assessment.
