What should you know about subcision and fractional laser?

A subcision needle or cannula separates fibrous attachments that pull a rolling scar downward. Fractional laser creates controlled microscopic treatment zones in the skin, leaving surrounding tissue to support healing and surface renewal. This can help texture and the edges around a scar, but it does not mechanically release a deep tether. The treatments therefore have different jobs and may be planned in stages.

Redness, warmth, swelling, crusting, tenderness, and temporary darkening or lightening can follow laser treatment. Subcision can cause bruising and swelling. Skin tone, recent tanning, active acne, infection, medicines, and a history of raised scars affect planning.

During consultation, show the clinician how the scar changes when the skin is stretched or relaxed. Discuss the laser type, depth, cooling or anaesthesia, expected downtime, and whether release should come before resurfacing. Protect treated skin from sun exposure as directed, use the recommended gentle skincare, and do not pick peeling areas. Keep follow-up appointments so healing and pigment changes can be checked.

Tell the clinic about increasing pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or swelling that worsens instead of settling. Urgent assessment is needed for eye symptoms, severe blistering, rapidly changing skin colour, breathing difficulty, or swelling of the lips or throat. Do not apply unapproved acids, bleaching products, or home devices to a recently treated area.
