What should you know about a stye white head?

The white head may represent collected inflammatory material at the edge of the eyelid. A stye can make the lid red, tender, and puffy, with discomfort when blinking. It may be visible on the skin side of the lid or less visible on the inner surface. The appearance does not tell you whether the problem will drain soon, and a painless lump may instead be a blocked oil gland. Eye discharge, widespread redness, or repeated lumps can point to a different or additional problem.

Wash your hands, then hold a clean warm compress against the closed eyelid for several minutes. Repeat regularly while the area is uncomfortable, using clean water and a clean cloth. Let the eyelid drain on its own; never lance, squeeze, or scrape the white head. Stop eye makeup and contact lens use until the lid has recovered, and do not share cosmetics or towels. Get prompt assessment for worsening swelling, redness spreading beyond the eyelid, blurred or reduced vision, pain with eye movement, marked light sensitivity, or feeling feverish and unwell.
